Kartik Utsav

The month of Kartika is also known as the month of Damodar as Lord Krishna performed one of his very famous past time “The Damodar Lila” in this month. Along with that a lot of the important pastimes of Lord Krishna in Vrindavan happened in this month, like the Govardhan pastime, Gopashtami - the first time Krishsna goes out with the cowherd boys for grazing calves was in this month, Radha Kund - Shyam Kund appearance day and many more which we have no knowledge about! Therefore this month is considered especially auspicious for devotional services.

In the “Skandha Purana” Lord Brahma says to Narada Muni that the month of “Kartika is very dear to Lord Krishna therefore by performing austerities, or restraining ones sense gratification and performing activities to please the senses of the Lord, one becomes very dear to the Krishna. Performing ‘Vrata’ in the month of Kartika (Damodara) is glorified profusely in the puranas.

As Satya yuga is the best of yugas, as the vedas are the best of scriptures, as ganga is the best of rivers, so kartika is the best of months, the most dear to Krsna. The vrata may begin on the ekadasi of the waxing moon of asvina, on the purnima, or (samkranti) when the sun enters the house of Libra.

Five activities are glorified: staying awake, early morning bath, worship of Tulasi, offering lamps and performing austerities during this auspicious month:

One should practice brahmacarya and give charity.

One is advised to give up eating beans, kalami saka, patola, eggplant, meat, fish, liquor, oil massage, illicit sex, grains cooked by others.

One should eat once a day.

One should increase ones devotional service by performing more deity worship, hearing and speaking about the Lord, by extra japa meditation (chanting the Hply name of Lord)  worshipping Tulasi, staying awake at night chanting, visiting holy the Holy Dhams where lord perform His trancedental pastimes and offering lamps to the Lord.

Kartik Utsava is celebrated with great enthusiasm at all ISKCON temples worldwide During the entire month, Lord Radha Damodar is worshiped by offering lamps along with singing the Damodarashtakam – Song spoken by the great sage Satyavrata muni. It is said that by offering lamp to Lord during the month of Kartik, one’s sins of many thousands of births are perished, he gets result of performing all Yagyas, bathing all the holy rivers, he gets glorious and fortunate, no sins exist in all the three world. This is the significance of the month of Kartika.
